RED LODGE - Firefighters pounced on a small lightning caused fire on Mount Maurice southeast of Red Lodge this morning, and were quickly able to get a line around the flames.
Beth Hermanson, public information officer for the Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team, tells Q2 that the smoke on Mt. Maurice was actually from three small spot fires sparked by lightning.
Hermanson says heavy air tankers quickly attacked the flames from the air, while two rapelling crews dropped into the fire from helicopters, and were able to contain it by mid-morning.
Hermanson says the Red Lodge area saw considerable lightning strikes overnight, resulting in several small fire starts.
